Braid, 2021

Second-hand bed sheets, duvet covers, tablecloths, machine sewing

Second-hand bed sheets, duvet covers, tablecloths were collected, then sewn together into three long fabric cloths and woven into a braid. The braid was hung from the roof of one of the central buildings in Perm – in the City Culture on the 8th of March and then later – from the Water tower (1905) in Izhevsk on May, 1, a local underground center for contemporary art.

The braid is a symbol of femininity, beauty and marital life, but the materials — household textile, hung from the roof or window — refer to extreme situations, catastrophies, dangerous and risky self-rescue, for example, from fire or domestic violence. Thus, the installation was aimed to raise questions about female labour and status quo, hidden and revealed aspects of private and public life in general.
